Isadora

Freely adapted from the life of Isadora Duncan - Avignon festival 2019

A woman, a dancer, a lover!

If history has only retained her tragic end, it is to another journey that we invite you, that of a woman who contributed to the liberation of the female body, invented free dance and was at the origin of modern dance.

Coming from the other side of the ocean, Isadora Duncan stunned the Belle Époque audience with her audacity, her dancing style, her thirst for freedom and her revolutionary spirit.

Through words, songs and dances intertwined, Isabelle Georges, Frederik Steenbrink and Axel Nouveau dialogue music, voice and body with Isadora. They tell the joys and fears of the dancer with, in filigree, the fragile balance of the creative process, the essential quest for poetry …

Don’t let them tame you !

There are characters that fascinate and leave an ever lasting impression, a myth. Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) is one of them.

Isadora Duncan was one of those women, born to break patterns. She is considered to be the creator of modern dance and one of the most fascinating and revolutionary figures in the artistic world. Her life, like hier death, was unusual.

She moved to Paris in 1900 where she quickly met with success. She founded a dance school which made many followers. Always with this aesthetic research based on the fluidity of movements. And a great freedom of expression favoring spontaneity and spirituality.

For Isadora Duncan, classical ballet, strict and codified, is “ugly and unnatural”. This is how we witness the birth of modern European dance. And like freedom is revolution, her life was also marked by strong choices, such as having children of different fathers without getting married, or supporting revolutionary Russia. Her extraordinary destiny, her whimsical life and her taste for all freedoms continue to inspire.
